Our Best Show All Year
Four days every year, the Scandinavian Festival Association (http://scandinavianfestival.com) converts downtown Junction City into little Scandinavia. Since 1961 the community has worked their hearts out to pull this off. Without fail, the costumed Vikings and Trolls are ready to pose for a photo opp. Most notable is the dancing — oh my how they dance! The little kinder-gardeners perform in full skirts and knickers. Not to be outdone, the adult dancers seem to just have arrived from the Old Country. The folk dancing takes place almost continuely on the three festival stages. Additionally, you can visit the children’s area; adults-only wine terrace and beer garden as well as see the nightly pageant. Each evening community dancing lasts well into the night. Amazingly, last year there was even an on-stage wedding ceremony And there are flowers everywhere! Oh my, we can hardly wait!
So What’s in all Those Little Shops?
Decorated booths line both sides of downtown streets. Indeed, everything Scandinavian delights the senses — you simply must try the Svenska kottbullar (Swedish meatballs), Aebleskiver (Danish doughnut holes), and the Lovin’ Oven Swedish meat pies. The arts and crafts vendors display hardanger embroidery (Hardangersom) and rosemaling folk art (Kurbitsmalning). Of course, the Norwegian Solje jewelry is one of our favorites. Solje distinctively moves with spoon dangles to bring the wearer good fortune. Of course we also display coin jewelry from the five Scandinavian countries.
Thulite — the National Stone of Norway
Visit our booth next to the main dance stage and see the national gemstone of Norway. Thulite comes from Leksvik, Norway on the coast of Trondheim Fjord. Curiously, this pink stone was named for the Norwegian mythical land of Thule.
Kudos to the Scandinavian Festival Association
Amazing that a community of some 5,000 consistently hosts such a wonderful event. Bless the all-volunteer Scandinavian Festival Association!
